Families that quake together, stay together

I had no idea that our trip to Hawaii would be topped off with an earthquake. We had gone there as part of Falafel Software's 2nd annual Maui retreat.

For Jerilyn and I, this was our first big vacation since our honeymoon 12 years ago and the first time we'd taken all four kids on an airplane. And it was the first time our family experienced an earthquake.

We were in Kihei on Maui so we didn't have it as bad as the big island. Some up and down  shaking. Kids screaming. Not much time to be scared as you tell them join to you in the doorway.

The power went out right away so we were short on news. I did have my concerns about being able to fly back to the mainland that night. We prepared by buying some extra water and food at the local Safeway. They had a backup generator and were operational, although it's a wierd experience shopping in the dark.

It turns out we had nothing to worry about. Power was restored to the island over the course of the day and our flight left at its scheduled time.

During the previous week, we had enjoyed some nice beaches in and south of Kihei. Plus we had gone snorkeling and enjoyed a lu'au with the Falafel folks. I cannot describe how wonderful this vacation was for our entire family.

If you're interested, I uploaded a smattering of photos here.

For those of you waiting for me to finish the Paid Subscriber module...all my fun and games are over for the year. I'm cracking the whip.
